China: Construction of water conveyance systems to
supply water to five villages so far deprived of it
Required amount: 76,000
Received: 0
Country and Region Three villages in a group called Tsarang, and two in another group called Walangou, Canton of Hualong, Province of Qinghai, People’s Republic of China
Problem The five villages the project is designed to support currently have no access to drinking water. The women and young girls have to spend five to six hours daily in order to fetch water from springs up to 7km away, while men are working in the fields. This lack of clean and safe water causes disease, particularly when combined with the very poor hygiene and sanitation situation in these locations. Additionally, young girls who are kept busy providing water are unable to attend school. The time spent by women collecting water means it cannot be spent on agricultural work, which limits already marginal agricultural/food production.
Purpose of the action Building water-supplying systems between the springs and the villages, so that each family has a safe running water supply. Freeing the female task force for agriculture. Providing normal sanitary living conditions.
Intended population The whole population of those 5 villages, that is around 1,000 people.
Beginning and duration of the project The work will last 8 to 10 months, from the moment when the financial means for the equipment of the first village has been collected. However the work cannot take place in winter as the ground is frozen; which means it may be postponed for a few months.
Amount needed US$ 76'000.00
Further information
Although China has undergone a tremendous economical evolution in the last few years, in many parts of the country living conditions are still precarious for the population. The province of Qinghai is the poorest in China. The average yearly income per head is US$ 1’100.00 in the country at large but is limited to 200.00 in that Province. In China as a whole, literacy prevails at a rate of 91%, but it only reached 27% in Qinghai. In China in general, people have a life expectancy of 70 years, but in Qinghai it is only of 57.3.
The problem of water Access to drinking water and sanitation is a basic requirement to improve the living conditions of a community. A supply of running water and toilets make a huge difference to the way of life of a village; the number of diseases due to polluted water is reduced and conflicts in relation with water can be avoided in families and in the community. Women can be relieved of the time consuming chore of collecting water and devote more time to other activities. Additionally, a regular supply of water allows the families improve their hygiene conditions.
Characteristics of the work In each village where a project of water conveyance is planned, a fully trained hydrologist carries out a survey of the water resources of the area. Then plans are drawn up to calculate the number of tanks and the length of pipes that are necessary to supply water to the village. The village people dig the excavations themselves so that each home in the village can be supplied with drinking water at a low cost.
On the spot, Appropriate Technology Asia works in collaboration with the local authorities as well as the Government of the Province that delivers the necessary permits.
Purpose of the action
Relieving the work burden placed on women through water collection.
Reducing the number of diseases caused to humans and cattle by pollution.
Increase of the agricultural production because women can spend more time in the fields.
Less food supplied by the local and the state government in case of severe draught.
Access to school for the girls who no longer have to fetch water.
Improvement of the status of women in the village.
Creation of vegetable gardens and other sources of food.
To enable the provision of sanitation facilities.
Nowadays families cannot live from the benefits of agriculture and men have to leave the village to find work in town for many months each year. The access to water will help enable agriculture to be developed, particularly growing vegetables, which will allow men to stay with their families all the year round.
